The Coffee Shop Epiphany
A few months ago, one of our team members was working from a coffee shop. It seemed like just another typical day: laptop open, headphones on, and connected to the free Wi-Fi, while answering emails and pushing code. Then came a simple yet profound question from a fellow patron: "Do you actually know who's operating this network?"
The query caught us off guard. The answer was, quite simply, no. There was no security incident, no drama unfolding, but the question sparked an intriguing conversation within our team about online privacy.
The Hidden Risks of Public Wi-Fi
Most of us connect to public Wi-Fi networks without a second thought. Airports, cafés, hotels, co-working spaces, universities—these are all regular stops in our daily lives. However, the convenience of these networks often comes at the cost of transparency. We seldom know who manages these networks, how they're configured, or who else might be connected.
This realization was one of the driving forces behind the creation of OllaVPN. Our approach wasn't born out of paranoia about the internet being perpetually dangerous. Instead, it was about ensuring that privacy doesn't hinge on trusting the Wi-Fi network you happen to be near.
Simplifying Privacy
Our mission was clear: provide users with a secure, encrypted connection that's simple to use. We aimed to strip away unnecessary complexity and focus on privacy without making it a technical hurdle.
While there's no shortage of VPN services on the market, we see this as a positive. Competition encourages the creation of better products. Our challenge wasn't in adding another button or server location to our service. It was in making privacy accessible to those who don't spend their weekends buried in networking documentation.

Our goal is to ensure that if a student connects from campus Wi-Fi, a freelancer works in a café with more confidence, or a traveler browses from an airport without fear of unsecured networks, then we've achieved something meaningful. Privacy is about empowerment, not concealment.
